Where We Work

SHRI works in two Eastern Indian states: Bihar and Jharkhand

Bihar

  • Bihar is the third most populous Indian state

  • It is the birthplace of both Buddhism and Jainism as well as the site of the world's oldest university

  • Bihar's economy is mostly based in agriculture, with 80% of the population working in that field

  • It also has the poorest health outcomes of any Indian state

Jharkhand

  • The region was originally a part of the Bihar state, but was recognized as independent in 2000

  • Jharkhand has more than 40% of India's mineral resources

  • But 39.1% of its population lives below the poverty line

  • And 19.6% of its children are malnourished
