Where We Work
SHRI works in two Eastern Indian states: Bihar and Jharkhand
Bihar
-
Bihar is the third most populous Indian state
-
It is the birthplace of both Buddhism and Jainism as well as the site of the world's oldest university
-
Bihar's economy is mostly based in agriculture, with 80% of the population working in that field
-
It also has the poorest health outcomes of any Indian state
Jharkhand
-
The region was originally a part of the Bihar state, but was recognized as independent in 2000
-
Jharkhand has more than 40% of India's mineral resources
-
But 39.1% of its population lives below the poverty line
-
And 19.6% of its children are malnourished
